Ever wonder what low-productivity coastal old-growth forest means? The photos below show old but stunted forests growing in bogs at low elevations, on rocky mountainsides, or in sub-alpine landscapes. These forests now constitute more than half of the remaining old-growth forests on BC’s coast and are generally of little to no commercial value.
The BC government regularly inflates their figures of remaining coastal old-growth forests by hundreds of thousands up to millions of hectares by including these forests in their statistics, along with the productive old-growth forests with large trees, also known as “ancient forests”. It’s like including your Monopoly money with your real money and then claiming to be a millionaire.
Please SPEAK UP to protect old-growth forests in BC and forestry jobs by telling the BC government to commit funding to protect these ancient forests.
